Objectives
After completing this activity, the participant will be able to:
- Distinguish between the concepts of quality of life (QOL), subjective well-being (SWB), and health-related quality of life (HRQOL), and explain why conflating them has limited research in this field.
- Describe the key findings from quantitative (meta-analytic) versus qualitative research on the effects of physical activity on QOL/SWB in people with disabilities, and identify why these two bodies of evidence tell different stories.
- Identify the six core elements of the Quality Participation Framework (QPF) and explain their role in shaping meaningful physical activity experiences for people with disabilities.
- Explain the five conditions proposed in the Quality Participation Model that must be met for a physical activity intervention to improve QOL/SWB.
- Evaluate the systemic and methodological barriers (e.g., exclusionary research practices, lack of theoretical frameworks) that have limited high-quality disability-inclusive physical activity research, and consider implications for future study design.
