Summary of the article

Individuals with avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID) often experience challenges in their daily activities, including approaching new foods, shopping for and preparing food, and eating in various contexts. Unfortunately, many of these individuals never receive treatment, and treatment needs far exceed the current capacity of mental health services. Given occupational therapists’ rich history in mental health and paediatric feeding disorder treatment, they are uniquely positioned to provide interventions for individuals with ARFID across the lifespan. This article spotlights the potential role of occupational therapy in ARFID treatment, current knowledge, and opportunities for future research. It offers a brief, valuable overview for occupational therapists interested in understanding how their skills may contribute to ARFID management.
