Course Aim
To equip occupational therapists with an evidence-informed understanding of palliative care principles and their application across the lifespan. Participants will explore how a palliative approach can enhance quality of life, function and participation for people living with serious, chronic or life-limiting conditions, regardless of practice setting.

Course Objectives
- Creating an understanding of the definition, principles and application of palliative care.
- Creating an understanding of the relevance of ethics in palliative care.
- Learning how to navigate difficult conversations with patients and their families as a team.
- Understanding the occupational challenges experienced by individuals requiring palliative care
- Understanding the role of occupational therapy in addressing these palliative care challenges
- Exploring OT intervention strategies in palliative care
- Exploring ways to cultivate self-care and capacity to care for others

Hanneke Lubbe (M.(Phil) Palliative Care)
Hanneke Lubbe is a co-founder of Hospice Bloemfontein and holds a Postgraduate Diploma as well as a Master’s Degree in Palliative Care from the University of Cape Town. These qualification, along with her training as a “death doula”, her experience as a trauma and grief counselor, and her previous role as a spiritual advisor at St. Luke’s Hospice in Cape Town, have equipped her with the skills and understanding to effectively support individuals at the end of their lives and their loved ones.
Natalie Pieters (BOccTher)
Natalie is passionate about oncology rehabilitation, palliative care, and gerontology and committed to delivering compassionate, holistic care, supporting students, and applying evidence-informed practice. She qualified as an occupational therapist in 2023 at the University of the Free State. She has completed training in gerontology, pain management, mindfulness, counselling and palliative care and is currently completing a Master’s Degree at UFS, exploring “Adaptive responses to occupational challenges among adults in palliative care receiving occupational therapy.” Natalie currently works in the hospital, hospice and retirement facility settings providing oncology and palliative care services, group work in gerontology and supervising students.
Rolyn Du Plessis (M Occ Ther, PhD Candidate)
Rolyn’s 19-year career in occupational therapy spans the paediatric, mental health and community fields. She completed her Master’s Degree in Occupational Therapy at the University of Pretoria in 2012 with her dissertation titled: Factors influencing the creative participation of people living in an inner city. She went on to complete a Postgraduate Diploma in Mindfulness-based interventions. She is currently enrolled in a Postgraduate Diploma in Lifestyle Oncology and is a PhD candidate at the University of the Witwatersrand. Her research is focusing on the designing of an integrated occupational therapy care pathway to address the psychosocial needs of adult cancer patients in South Africa. Rolyn currently works in Private Practice in Bloemfontein, specialising in Oncology Rehabilitation.
