Objectives of this course:
On completion of this CPD activity, the participant will be able to:
- Describe South Africa’s public healthcare structure and settings, with specific reference to the delivery of vocational rehabilitation (VR) services.
- Identify barriers to delivering VR services, particularly at a grassroots level in South Africa.
- Describe strategies and a specific program for equipping novice occupational therapists to provide VR services at a grassroots level in South Africa.
- Discuss the acceptability and utility of the Return-to-Work Decision Tree, the Performance-Based Assessment Tool, and the Job Match Tool in facilitating occupational therapists’ clinical reasoning during VR service delivery.
- Provide suggestions for improving the Return-to-Work Decision Tree, the Performance-Based Assessment Tool, and the Job Match Tool.

Summary of the article
Occupational therapists delivering vocational rehabilitation (VR) services at a grassroots level in South Africa often lack the knowledge, skills, and confidence required for effective practice. The absence of defined procedures and protocols further limits VR services. To address these barriers, three tools have been developed to support evidence-based, context-specific clinical reasoning: the Return-to-Work Decision Tree, the Performance-Based Assessment Tool, and the Job Match Tool. This study aimed to establish consensus on the acceptability and utility of these tools in facilitating occupational therapists’ clinical reasoning during VR assessment and intervention.
